Different Stress Incontinence Treatment

Ever laughed so hard or sneezed that you peed?  Even if it’s just a tinkle or a squirt this can be caused by stress incontinence.  Don’t be shy it happens to more people than one might want to admit.  What is stress incontinence?  It is for better lack of a term, when the body pees when you don’t want it to, or for a more technical term, when the body expels urine involuntarily.

There are many reasons as to why the body looses its ability to control expelling this liquid on command or to hold it in when needed.  It all depends on the normal function of the body lower urinary tract muscles, the nervous system and the kidneys.  Several known factors may contribute to this problem that may include, childbirth, chronic coughing such as bronchitis, obesity, neurological injury, taking certain medicines, injury to the lower pelvic area and some surgeries.

Treatments for stress incontinence vary and are determined by the severity of the problem.  Such as your doctor may prescribe something as simple as a behavioral change like not taking in so much liquids or even quit smoking if you smoke.  After giving birth where stress incontinence can occur, pelvic muscle strengthen exercises maybe prescribed in the form of kegal exercises where the woman is instructed to practice contracting their pelvic muscles like squeezing their pelvic muscles to stop the flow of urine.  Items such as the vaginal cone can be used to help strengthen the pelvic muscles where the woman inserts the cone and holds it in place for fifteen minutes twice a day.

The more severe the stress incontinence is, treatment for stress incontinence may include medications such as Antimuscarinic drugs block bladder contractions and are usually tried before other drug treatments.  Alpha-adrenergic agonist drugs are used to help strengthen the sphincter muscle that controls the urge to pee.  But if none of these seem to help the last resort is surgery and only surgery is recommended if the exact determination of the problem is identified.  Collagen is a surgical treatment used for stress incontinence where the collagen helps make the area around the urethra thicker that in turns help urine control.  As with all surgeries there are risks involved where infection can occur or in men temporary erectile dysfunction.

Stress incontinence treatments vary depending on the severity of the problem.   Sometimes it is only temporary where as the chronic coughing dissipates so does stress incontinence.  Simple behavior changes like quitting smoking, where the smokers cough stops and so does the involuntary loss of urine disappears as well.  After the birth of a child, with simple exercises like the kegal may help stop stress incontinence. But for more serious cases should be discussed with your doctor for other treatments available to treat stress incontinence and find which one is right for you.
