Stress Disability

Stress Disability

Stress disability is becoming more and more common in employee/employer relations.  It is one of the largest mysteries in the professional business arena and professionals believe that stress disability could become more prevalent over the next few years.  Already stress disability has become justifiable and has shown up on workers’ compensation claims.  There is, however, a gray area in filing a stress disability claim and this gray area sometimes keeps employees and employers from connecting in the field of employees overall general health and possible treatment that they could receive.

Stress is not a rare occurrence and everyone has experienced it on the job at least once in their lives.  Most of the time we can easily blow off the stress by partaking in something we enjoy after work, like a long hot bath or exercise routine.  However, sometimes stress disability can be triggered when a stressor that is more intense than the everyday occurrences happen.  They usually involve some form of accident of crime in the workplace and it is very common to see in professions such as police and fire fighters.  The horrid things they see on a day to day basis are definitely enough to trigger work related stress disability.

Stress disability is now a major part of workers’ compensation claims across the United States although some stated require that a bodily injury must be present in order to file the claim.  Employers are required to pay for their employee’s medical care if they are injured on the job, but they can fight a workers’ compensation claim if they do not believe that the employee is truly injured.  Many employers do not even know that their employee is under a stress disability until they receive the workers’ compensation claim.

Herein lays a problem.  Many employers back away from a stress disability claim instead of getting more involved in the employee’s life.  They don’t understand what has caused the disability or how the employee’s work environment has contributed to the employee’s problem.  If more employers attempt to understand the needs of the employee and how the work environment has contributed to the stress disability, they may be able to change things in the office before more of their workers suffer the same fate.

Stress disability cases could become fewer if employers simply state what they expect from their employees right off the bat.  When employees understand what they need to accomplish during their work day, how much time they have to do it in, and what resources are available, they will feel less stress then someone simply left to figure out it on their own.
